Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has nominated former Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO Nancy Njeri Macharia to serve as the Chairperson of the Murang’a County Public Service Board.
According to a communication to the Murang’a County Assembly
dated June 18, 2025, Dr. Macharia made it to a list of five individuals
nominated to the board, which is responsible for overseeing public service
appointments within the county.
“Pursuant to Section 6 of the Public Appointments (County
Assemblies Approval) Act 2017 and Section 58A (7) of the County Governments
Act, 2012, vide a letter Ref. MCG/CS/GOV/ST/2(162) dated June 10, 2025, the
County Assembly received notification that Governor of Murang’a County
Government Dr Irungu Kang’ata has nominated the following as Chairperson,
Members and Secretary to the Murang’a County Public Service Board,” reads the
message presented to the Assembly.
The other three members include Dr. Louis Mwende Musikali, Johnson
Kang’ethe Kinyua and Dr. Brian Lishenga Makamu, while Oscar Kimani Gathura was
nominated as Secretary.
The Assembly was further informed that the names had been
submitted to the Governance, Labour and Social Welfare, and Justice and Legal
Affairs Committee in line with Standing Order 47 for vetting and that the committee
would hold an approval hearing and table
its report for consideration.
If approved, Dr Macharia will take over the new role for a period
of a renewable five years.
The new nomination comes just as Dr. Macharia’s term as TSC
CEO comes to an end on June 30, 2025.
TSC has since named Eveleen Mitei as Acting CEO through an
internal memo dated June 1, 2025.
She had held the position for one year after serving nearly a
decade at the helm of the national teachers' employer. If approved, she will
take up the new county role for a five-year term, with the possibility of
re-appointment for another five years.
Following her exit, TSC named Eveleen Mitei as Acting CEO
through an internal memo dated June 1, 2025.
Mitei, who currently serves as Deputy Head of the Human
Resources Directorate and oversees the HRM Division, was to assume the role in
an acting capacity, but the recruitment process was suspended by the Employment
and Labour Relations Court pending determination of a petition filed by Thomas
Oyugi.
In the petition, Oyugi raises concerns over alleged
constitutional and procedural issues related to the recruitment criteria.
The petitioner alleged that the process was riddled with
constitutional violations and discriminatory criteria.
He also claimed that the vacancy was not officially declared
before the advertisement and questioned the adequacy of the 21-day application
window, which opened on May 6 and closed on May 27, 2025.
