A former Assistant Chief stationed in Kisumu County has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after being found guilty of murder.

Joel Juma Oliewo, the former Assistant Chief of Upper Kadongo sub-location in Kisumu-West Sub County, reportedly committed the offense on October 7, 2021, when he killed Eric Ochieng Atito at Kadawa village.

Kisumu High Court Justice Roselyne Aburili had initially placed Oliewo on his defense on August 19, 2024, after the prosecution proved beyond a reasonable doubt that he killed the Atito.

Justice Aburili considered the evidence presented in court and agreed that it was sufficient to warrant placing the accused on his defense.

Oliewo's trial, which began on November 14, 2023, saw a total of 11 protection witnesses testify before the court.

According to the judge, Oliewo's sentencing will act as a deterrent to others in similar positions, ensuring they never take the law into their own hands.
