Normal operations are set to resume at the Kakamega, Migori and Kitale airstrips after the completion of rehabilitation works at the end of this month.

The airstrips were shut down last year after engineers pointed out that there was a need for the construction of a Runway Safety Area (RSA) since the facilities would also undergo renovations later.

According to reports, Kenya Airport Authority (KAA) has spent Ksh.310 million in the Lichota airstrip in Migori. Ksh.174 million and Ksh.221 million were also allocated to the Kakamega and Kitale airstrips respectively.

The Migori airstrip will be key in promoting tourism in the area while the Kitale airstrip will be instrumental in the transportation of horticultural products.

KAA Western region manager Selina Gor said the Kakamega facility will now accommodate four planes with a capacity of 40 passengers each at any given time.

He added that it will aid in decongesting the Kisumu International Airport.

The airstrip, which has a 1.2-kilometre strip, was given two new taxiways that will allow for the movement of any aircraft in and away from the terminal building.

The project will be handed over to KAA by the end of February to start operations.
