Five arrested for illegal possession of KPLC equipment

Five people have been arrested in Kirinyaga County by the Mt Kenya Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) security team for carrying out illegal connections, stealing meters and CIUs, possession of a wooden climber, safety belt and other electrical tools.

According to Kirinyaga branch manager Eng. Ruto Kipkorir, the suspects were arrested in Kagio town and taken to Kiamaciri police station.

Ruto said the first suspect, a notorious electrician identified as John Wareri was at his hideout within Kagio town where he had been on KPLC security team radar for carrying out illegal connections and interfering with TX fuses within Kirinyaga County.

“The suspect was taken to Kiamaciri police station and will be charged with offence of carrying out electricity operations without license, unauthorized connections of energy and other energy related offences,” Ruto said.

KPLC Security team also arrested Nelson Maina, who is the chairperson of Kagio electricians’ welfare group for carrying out illegal connections and stealing of meters and CIUs within the region. He was also taken to Kiamaciri police station and will be charged with stealing energy equipment and carrying out electricity operations without license.

The third suspect identified as David Mungai was arrested at Kiamaciri village within Kagio town while in possession of a pair of wooden climbers, a safety belt and set of assorted electrical tools.

“The suspect   has been on security radar for carrying out illegal connections and interfering with Tx fuses within Kirinyaga county and his motorcycle was detained at Kiamaciri police station,” Ruto said.

KPLC security team, acting on a tip off, successfully traced and arrested Jane Wangithi, a plot owner at Kagio and her tenant Ken Kathimba after they were found with 3 migrated prepaid meters.

The duo was taken to Kiamaciri police station where they were interrogated and recorded statements.

While in Kangai village in Mwea constituency Energy Principal secretary Alex Wachira warned against stealing KPLC energy equipment urging residents to report any instances in the branch offices in their region.
