Five arrested as NACADA nabs over 55,000 litres of illicit alcohol in Kisii

Over 55,000 litres of kangara and 500 litres of chang’aa nabbed in Mwaguto Village, Kisii South Sub-County.
Authorities seized over 55,000 litres of kangara and 500 litres of chang’aa in the region.
The early morning raid, conducted by a multi-agency team including police officers and local administrators, uncovered a sophisticated brewing operation on a four-acre property equipped with storage facilities and brewing equipment.
NACADA CEO Dr Anthony Omerikwa lauded the operation as a significant step in curbing illicit alcohol production and warned of continued enforcement actions. “This is a clear message to all those engaging in this illegal business—we are coming for you,” he declared.
Dr Omerikwa further announced plans to initiate legal proceedings to forfeit the four-acre property to the government, ensuring its permanent closure as a brewing site. “This property is a crime scene, and we will ensure it is reverted to the state as part of our efforts to dismantle these networks completely,” he stated.
Local residents expressed relief following the raid, citing the negative impact of illicit brews on the community, including crime and economic hardship. Area Chief Samuel Nyabuto commended the crackdown and called for continued vigilance to eliminate the vice.
The five suspects are set to be arraigned in court as NACADA escalates its nationwide crackdown on illicit alcohol.
