During a routine patrol on Kanyonyoo-Embu Highway, officers seized a carton box bearing a milk brand logo.
When the officers opened the box, they discovered ten water gel explosives marked EXPLOGEL V6, one detonating cord, and two IDEAL Electric Detonators.
The incident resulted in the arrest of Lawrance Kioko Mutuku, the bus driver, and Said Rashid Amour, the conductor.
The bus was escorted to the Kanyonyo Police Station.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), forensic investigations led detectives from the Anti-Terrorist Police Unit (ATPU) and Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) to the main suspect, Brenda Imboyanga Makhulungu, who was apprehended in Mundutsu village in Kakamega County.
"Brenda, the registered sender of the package, declared the explosives as "Dawa ya Maji" at Tahmeed's Kakamega office, orchestrating its journey from Kakamega to Mombasa and then to the Meru-bound bus via Kitui," according to police.
DCI also stated that two more suspects, David Tindi Andala and John Kariuki Kung'u, were apprehended in Meru town following additional investigations.
The suspects are in custody awaiting further investigation, with the bus and seized explosives held as exhibits.
