FIDA to represent Mercy Cherono as three cops detained for 9 days

The Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA) will offer legal representation for Mercy Cherono in efforts to bring to justice to the officers who assaulted her.

Speaking at Nakuru Level 5 hospital after visiting Cherono, FIDA Executive Director Ann Ireri revealed that they have received hundreds of cases involving violations women in the last few months.

She expressed concern over the rising number of cases of gender based violence particularly in the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, three officers linked to the assault were arraigned in court on Friday.

Inspector of Police David Kiprotich and Police constables Henry Muregi and Tom Kikao have been detained for nine days pending completion of investigations.

Nakuru principal Magistrate Faith Munyi allowed the application by the investigating officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Daniel Ngetich.

“The suspects are officers in authority. We believe they might interfere with witnesses, we also want to keep them safe as we have information that there might be a demonstration in the area,” said Ngetich.
