FIDA condemns violence on Maseno census officer
The Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has strongly condemned the heinous attack on a Maseno census enumerator that occurred on August 24.
According to FIDA Chairman Josephine Mong’are, the incident shows that women and girls are still a vulnerable group despite the measures placed to curb gender based violence.
“FIDA-Kenya demands a speedy investigation into the matter so as to bring the perpetrators to book. Such acts of violence against women and girls should not go unpunished,” the statement reads.
The lawyers further noted that they will extend legal support to the survivor to ensure justice is served and such violence against women and girls does not go unpunished.
They further called upon the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government to beef up security for census enumerators during the census period.
“We also call upon members of the public to remain vigilant, and ensure the safety of these public officers as they carry out national duty,” said Mong’are.
On Saturday night, a census enumerator attached to Maseno, Kisumu County was gang raped and robbed by unknown attackers.
Two suspects linked to the incident have since been arrested.
