Farmers urged to sell macadamia nuts at not less than Ksh.100 per kilo

Agriculture CS Mutahi Kagwe addressing the press on March, 3, 2025 accompanied by Cereal Millers Association CEO Paloma Fernandez and Cereal Growers Association CEO Anthony Kioko.

Farmers have been urged to sell their high-quality macadamia nuts to designated collection centres to capitalise on the new prices stipulated by Agriculture CS Mutahi Kagwe.

While appearing before the Senate, CS Kagwe explained that each farmer should be paid a minimum price of Ksh.100 per kilo for macadamia nuts.

He urged the farmers to take advantage of the harvesting season, which kicked off on March 1, 2025.

In a statement on Saturday, Jane Maigua, chairperson of the MACNUT Association, echoed Kagwe's sentiments and explained that the processors are ready to purchase the nuts from farmers.

She listed the collection centres across regions such as Murang’a, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, Meru, Embu, Machakos, Taita Taveta, Baringo, Bomet, Transzoia, and Makueni.

“We are committed to ensuring that you are not exploited and receive a fair price for your efforts,” she said.

The association's chair also encouraged farmers to register with cooperatives and groups and take advantage of financial opportunities, training programs and subsidised bio-fertilisers.

In his presentation before the Senate, CS Kagwe highlighted the potential for value addition in the macadamia nut sector, citing the country's capacity to process 120,000 metric tons, supported by investments surpassing Ksh.15 billion.
