Family seeks justice after middle-aged woman mauled to death by hyenas in Juja

The middle-aged woman who ran a small food kiosk, known locally as a "Kibanda," was on her way to work after buying kale, cabbages, and other supplies for her daily operations.

Residents of Juja South are living in fear after Nancy Njoki, a local food vendor, was fatally attacked by wild animals suspected to be hyenas while returning to her kiosk from the market.

The horrific incident occurred at Juja South Estate, about four kilometres from the busy Thika Super Highway.

The middle-aged woman who ran a small food kiosk, known locally as a "Kibanda," was on her way to work after buying kale, cabbages, and other supplies for her daily operations.

Witnesses reported that Njoki was attacked by hyenas at dusk, when wild animals are known to be most active.

Her belongings were found scattered a few meters from the attack site.

The attack was especially brutal; the hyenas allegedly devoured her head, stomach, and waist.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as horrific, expressing shock and fear at the presence of wild animals in the area.

Allan Mburu, a local bodaboda operator, expressed his concerns, saying, "It is not the first time we have been threatened by hyenas and other animals here. She had just walked from the market with some items to her Kibanda to prepare lunch for the casual workers. Now I am not even sure where they will eat today. It is very sad."

This tragedy has sparked local concerns about wildlife encroachment, a recurring issue in Juja Sub-County.

Residents have long been concerned about the dangers posed by hyenas and other wild animals that frequently roam through residential areas.

Following Njoki's death, her family, led by her niece Martin Ngigi, has announced that they will take legal action against the Kenya Wildlife Service.

Ngigi expressed the family's deep grief and frustration, saying, "It is very sad to lose your aunt in this manner. It was not an accident or a disease; she was attacked and killed by wild animals. It is very painful."

In response to the incident, local police and KWS officers arrived on the scene to investigate.

Authorities collected Njoki's body, which was then taken to Kenyatta University Funeral Home for a post-mortem examination.

This examination will aid in determining the precise cause of death and provide additional information about the nature of the attack.
