Expectant mothers endure pain on boats, traders count losses after Garissa-Madogo road collapsed

The Garissa-Madogo road in Tana River County continues to be impassable at the Kona Punda area.

Three weeks after the road was cut off by raging floods, officials from the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) were in Tana River on Thursday, May 23, to rebuild it. However, the repairs by KeNHA did not last long as the road collapsed hours later.

The destruction of the road has brought unending suffering to the residents of Garissa and Tana River Counties who now call on the government to provide a lasting solution to the problem.

On Saturday, two expectant mothers brought from the remote part of Tana River had to endure the pain of being moved on makeshift boats to the other side of the road so that they can be rushed to Garissa Referral hospital.

Traders in the area are equally counting losses their goods perish due to failure to pass through the cut off of the road.

But even more worse is the complete disconnection of power in Madogo town and its environs for close to a month now due to a fallen power pole as a result of floods.

Residents have been complaining to the authorities for the issue to be addressed but nothing has been done to date.

Traders in the town say they have counted losses running in to millions of shillings since the problem started.

Leaders also say the town has witnessed increased cases of insecurity with muggers taking advantage of the situation.
