Former Samburu Governor Moses Lenolkulal has been fined about Ksh.85 million after he was found guilty of corruptly receiving public funds amounting to Ksh.84 million.

Lenolkulal and 10 other co-accused persons were convicted of various counts including abuse of office, conflict of interest and unlawful acquisition of public property.

His former proxy, Hesbon Ndathi, has also been fined Ksh. 83 million or sentenced to 8 years in prison.

Delivering the sentence on Thursday evening, Chief Magistrate Thomas Nzioki ordered Lenolkulal to pay a fine of Ksh.1 million or serve four years in jail for the offence of conflict of interest.

For unlawful acquisition of public property, the former Governor and his co-accused were also ordered to pay Ksh.1 million or serve four years in jail.

Further, Lenolkulal was fined Ksh.83.4 million for apportioning public funds unlawfully.

In addition to the sentence, the ex-governor was also barred from holding an elective office for 10 years.

The other convicts, who were officials at the county, received lighter penalties. Each was fined Ksh. 700,000 or given a 4-year prison sentence.

Currently, 40 other serving and former county officials are under investigation for allegedly embezzling over Ksh. 100 billion.
