Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi says the ministry is in the process of reviving works at the Muhoroni Gas Turbine plant at the border of Kisumu and Kericho counties to boost electricity supply in the Southern Nyanza region.

Wandayi says the plant which is run by KenGen and with a capacity to generate 60 megawatts topped operations in June 2023.

The CS says its non-operationalization has led to constant power blackouts in both Nyanza, western and rift valley regions.

“The non-operation of this plant has a big impact in the total capacity. We are exploring ways of bringing it back to life within the shortest time possible to address shortage of power,” said Wandayi.

Speaking when he made a fact-finding mission at the plant on Saturday, the CS further announced that his ministry has lined up a number of projects across Nyanza, Western and Rift valley regions to boost electricity supply and solve in long term the challenges of blackouts.

“To address power shortage here, we have to expand transmission infrastructure and building of new substations,” he said.

Kisumu County Woman Rep Ruth Odinga, who accompanied the CS, said the electricity projects once complete will help especially sugar mills in the region and other companies to efficiently carry out their operations on constant supply of power.
