The Embu County Security Committee has requested additional time to investigate the disappearance of 24-year-old Billy Mwangi, following a 24-hour ultimatum issued by local residents demanding his safe return.
Embu residents, led by Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji, staged demonstrations on Friday, threatening to continue protests if Mwangi is not found.
However, Embu County Police Commander Samuel Muthami urged the public to remain patient, assuring them that security teams are working tirelessly to resolve the matter.
"We are actively investigating the abduction of Billy Mwangi and have already received a formal petition from his parents, as well as concerns raised during yesterday’s demonstrations," Muthami said. "There is no need for further protests as the message has been clearly communicated to us. We appeal to residents to cancel the planned demonstrations on Monday to allow us to focus on the search."
Speaking on behalf of Embu County Commissioner Jack Obour, Embu West Deputy Commissioner Mercy Gatobu also called for calm.
She emphasized that a joint security committee meeting was convened to review Friday’s demonstrations and strategize on handling the situation.
"We are aware of the planned demonstrations circulating on social media. We urge residents to give us time to address their concerns and resolve this issue," Gatobu said.
The security team reiterated their commitment to cracking the case and appealed to organizers of the protests to give investigators the space needed to find Mwangi.
