The National Transport and Safety Authority
(NTSA) officers on Friday arrested a rogue Embassava Sacco conductor who
allegedly threw a passenger out of a moving bus on Outering Road in Nairobi.
The
said passenger, a 17-year-old boy, reportedly died on the spot.
Roads
and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said the tout, since
identified as Dennis Mageto Ombichi, has now been handed to the police and is
set to be arraigned.
“Following
the unfortunate incident that led to the loss of the life of a passenger
onboard a vehicle belonging to Embasava Sacco, the conductor who was at large
has been apprehended by NTSA and handed over to the police,” Murkomen said in a
statement on Friday.
“Dennis
Mageto Ombichi was booked vide O.B 12/19/05/2023 at Capital Hill Police Station
for the offence of failing due care of passengers aboard a PSV Vehicle.”
CS
Murkomen mourned the deceased, further reassuring his family that the suspect will
face the full wrath of the law.
The
incident occurred in Pipeline, Embakasi East Constituency, on Wednesday
evening; witnesses said the conductor pushed the teenager out of the moving bus,
which simultaneously then ran over him.
The
deceased, who was accompanied by his brother, is said to have fallen short of
Ksh.20 while paying his bus fare.
A
scuffle thereby ensued after which the conductor reportedly tossed him out of
the bus, leading to his death.
Passersby
and onlookers rushed to the scene baying for the conductor's blood and set the
bus on fire; the conductor however managed to evade the irate mob and fled.
Embassava
Sacco management has since refuted claims that the boy was pushed, instead maintaining
that he fell by accident.
