Eldoret: Youths stranded after turning up for non-existent job recruitment advertised by gov't
Hundreds of youth were
stranded outside Eldoret Polytechnic in Uasin Gishu County on Thursday after
turning up for a foreign job recruitment exercise advertised by the Ministry of
Labour and Social Protection.
The agitated youth
said they reported at the institution as early as 5 a.m., only to be turned
away by the security at the gate who said they had no such information.
Chepkarai Marius from
Kesses sub-county slammed the government for failing to adhere to what they had
posted on the ministry's website.
Marius said the government
is frustrating the unemployed youths.
“It is very frustrating; some of us have
come from far and our parents had to sell chicken to get us bus fare. Can President
William Ruto address this issue, is it a real government initiative or it is
fake?” he said.
The incident came just a week after a
similar case in Kisii County where
youth turned up for a job recruitment exercise advertised by the Labour
Ministry but failed to take off.
The over 200 youth showed up at
the Kisii National Polytechnic to find no officials were on the ground
for such an exercise.
In response, the Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred
Mutua told Citizen TV his ministry sent out a notice in early December putting
on hold the recruitment exercise.
Mutua said the government wanted the pilot
counties to process the initial job offers and also streamline the system
before announcing new dates.
