El Nino: 87,728 people rendered homeless across 37 counties
Twenty-four
hours after the weatherman warned of isolated storms and intense rainfall
across six regions, various counties were pounded by heavy rains on Sunday
afternoon.
According
to the Kenya Red Cross, a total of 87,728 people have been rendered homeless
and are currently residing in 169 camps spread across the country.
Some
168 people have so far died with 242 others injured due to instances attributed
to the floods.
Meanwhile,
37 counties have recorded effects of the ongoing floods with the coastal and
North Eastern regions being the worst hit, while 18,394 acres of farmland have
been laid waste with 17,287 herds of livestock being swept away.
Two
more cases of cholera were reported at Amu Island in Lamu county, bringing the
cumulative number of cholera cases recorded in the county to 65 in the last month.
The
Kenya Red Cross has so far airlifted 87 tonnes of food to families affected by
the floods with 39,000 people benefitting from sanitation and hygiene services.
Transport
along the Modogashe-Habaswein road has been fully restored with the
Kitui-Mutomo and the Madogo roads undergoing renovation works.
The
Kenya Red Cross has however cautioned motorists plying the Isiolo Moyale road
to exercise caution when using the road especially when it rains.
