Eight people killed, several injured after bus rams lorry at Mai Mahiu

Eight people were on Saturday killed and several others injured following a road accident involving a bus and a lorry on the Nairobi-Mai Mahiu route.

According to a police report, the accident happened after the bus rammed the lorry that was ferrying sand towards Nairobi.

A police source who declined to be named, and who was at the scene during the time of the accident, alleged that the driver of the bus fell asleep on the wheel, thereby losing control of the vehicle and ramming the oncoming lorry.

Among the dead, who were traveling in the bus, are four women and four men said to have been headed to a burial in Kisii.

The 2am accident caused a traffic snarl up on the busy Mai Mahiu-Narok highway as police moved in to clear the scene.

The injured were rushed to Naivasha Level 4 Hospital for treatment while the bodies of the deceased are at the same facility’s mortuary.
