The Kenya Red Cross Society on Sunday mid-morning evacuated eight people to safety as floods continue to wreak havoc in Garissa County.

The eight were marooned at Fast Farm in Bula Vumbi, Garissa Township, alongside several heads of livestock, the humanitarian organization said.

It added that its team was headed to another farm where six more people were reported to be marooned by floodwaters.

The flooding from ongoing rains has so far led to the death of over 83 people countrywide.

Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura on Saturday said the floods have displaced 24,196 households comprising 131,450 people.

The Kenya Red Cross has set up about 59 IDP camps, rescued 350 people, distributed non-food items to over 22,000 people and supported over 360 households with food.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has predicted that rainfall is expected to continue over several parts of the country, with over 40 counties expected to receive heavy rainfall in the coming days.
