Carcasses of donkeys slaughtered in Kirinyaga.

Residents of Kutus town in Mwea-East Sub-county, Kirinyaga County, were left in shock on Saturday morning after discovering eight donkeys had been stolen and slaughtered in the area.

According to the donkey owners, only a few carcasses were found dumped in a bush near Kutus Mjini by local villagers.

Gabriel Njue, whose five donkeys were stolen, expressed his frustration, stating that he relied on them to transport goods from the market and fetch water for local residents. "They've taken away my livelihood. I am now jobless," Njue said.

Peterson Ndege, who lost two donkeys, voiced growing concern over the increasing number of donkey thefts in the area. "This is the third time donkeys have been stolen in Kutus town, and we suspect that donkey meat might be sold in the town," Mr. Ndege remarked.

Dennis Kamau, who had one donkey stolen, added that they had suffered greatly as they depended on donkeys for transport.

"We urge the police to investigate this illegal trade. Donkeys are crucial for transport in Kirinyaga," Kamau said.
