The Kenya Medical
Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) is set to begin its
Annual Delegates Conference (ADC) on Friday, May 9, at the PrideInn Paradise
Beach Hotel & Convention Centre in Mombasa.
The conference marks
one year since the union's 56-day nationwide doctors' strike, a prolonged
industrial action that spotlighted long-standing grievances in the country’s
healthcare sector.
“The gathering
marks the one-year anniversary of our historic 56-day strike, a testament to
the unwavering resolve and unity of Kenyan doctors in their pursuit of a better
healthcare system,” KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah said in a press
statement released on Wednesday.
Dr. Atellah noted
that the strike led to the signing of a Return-to-Work Formula (RWTF), which
laid out several commitments from the government aimed at addressing doctors'
concerns.
“Today, we affirm
that the implementation of these commitments is underway, marking crucial
progress in addressing the long-standing issues that necessitated our industrial
action,” he noted.
A key highlight of
this year’s conference - which will bring together the highest decision making organ of the doctors' union - will be the attendance of Health Cabinet Secretary Aden
Duale, who is expected to engage directly with union delegates.
His presence, the
union boss stated, “underscores the critical importance of this juncture and
provides a much-needed platform for constructive dialogue and collaboration.”
Themed ‘Caring for
the Caregivers: Prioritizing Doctors' Rights and Well-being for a Healthier
Nation,’ the conference will focus on strategies to improve the welfare of
healthcare workers, particularly doctors, pharmacists, and dentists.
“KMPDU recognizes
that a thriving healthcare system is intrinsically linked to the well-being of
its practitioners,” Dr. Atellah said, adding that the event will explore solutions
around mental health support, workplace conditions, and professional rights.
Delegates will
also evaluate progress on the RTWF, discuss the future of healthcare delivery,
and renew their commitment to unity and advocacy.
“KMPDU is resolute
in its commitment to advocating for its members and working collaboratively
with all stakeholders to achieve a healthcare system that truly serves the
needs of all Kenyans,” added the union Secretary General.
