Driver arrested over reckless driving on Nyeri-Nairobi Highway

The driver of the second matatu, captured dangerously swerving on the Nyeri-Nairobi Highway in Makuyu, has been arrested.

According to the National Police Service, the suspect, Cliff Mike Mwathi Wangui, was behind the wheel of one of the matatus and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

In an undated video that has since gone viral, two matatus, registered as KBH 889N and KCF 996R, blatantly ignore road rules and regulations. Wangui was driving KBH 889N during the incident.

The footage shows the vehicles weaving recklessly across the busy highway, demonstrating a complete disregard for the safety of other motorists. Passengers in the matatus can be seen hanging dangerously out of the windows, seemingly oblivious to the risks involved.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) reported that the owner of the other matatu was arrested along with its driver and conductor, all of whom faced charges at Kenol Law Courts.

NTSA stated that the driver was fined Ksh 120,000 and had his license revoked for one year.

The vehicle’s owner received a Ksh 20,000 fine, while the conductor, who is also the owner's son, was fined Ksh 12,000.

The incident was recorded by a driver following the matatus, who can be heard expressing shock at the reckless behavior with his passengers.
