Drama in Parliament as Azimio, Kenya Kwanza MPs clash over protests
Drama rocked the National Assembly as MPs
from Kenya Kwanza and Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalitions clashed over
brutality meted on members of the public during the opposition’s
anti-government protests.
In
a motion of adjournment tabled by Kisumu West MP Rosa Buyu, MPs from the
opposition wanted Parliament to censure Inspector General of Police Japhet
Koome over what they termed as police use of force against demonstrators.
Kenya
Kwanza legislators, on the other hand, blamed the killings and destruction of
property on the opposition and their supporters.
“We
have had our people die...it shows that they were killed by bullets...we want
this House to discuss the conduct of our police force,” MP Buyu said.
“We
are not going to allow the opposition benches to use these floor to sanitise
their streets demos. We have seen people hurling stones at the police, we have
seen them attack businesses...is that the country we want?” Posed Majority
Leader Kimani Ichung’wah.
Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi however defended the opposition saying, “What we can tell Kenya Kwanza is that Kenyans will not stop asking for their rights...even in the absence of Raila Odinga, Kenyans will still say no to unjustified taxation.”
