DPP withdraws charges against six Azimio leaders arrested during protests

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji has withdrawn  cases against six leaders allied to Azimio la Umoja coalition. 

On Monday, DPP withdrew the cases at Kahawa Law Courts and promised to also withdraw over 200 cases against Azimio supporters countrywide. 

Ugunja MP James Opiyo Wandayi, Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo, Richard Chonga (Kilifi South MP), Amina Laura Mnyazi (Malindi), George Yogo Obure and Esther Oromi are among the leaders who faced charges of unlawful assembly and malicious damage of property. 

Lawyer Danstan Omari, who has been representing Azimio supporters in court said that those who appeared before Kibra and Makadara law courts will also be released.

“The court has accepted to release them and their bonds will be refunded. I thank the courts for being steadfast,” Omari said. 

The lawyer added that the accused were not charged legally, and their freedom will bring peace and unity to the country.

While calling off mass protests on Sunday, Azimio leader Raila Odinga demanded the unconditional release of all who had been arrested in connection to the demonstrations.
