DPP orders DCI to probe Nairobi preacher over ethnic incitement
The Office of the Director of Public
Prosecutions (ODPP) has ordered the Directorate of Criminal Investigations
(DCI) to probe a Nairobi preacher for making statements it says could
exacerbate ethnic tensions countrywide.
In a statement released on Saturday, the
ODPP, while referencing the preacher's utterances, noted that his statement
could incite ethnic contempt, hatred, hostility, violence and discrimination
among Kenyans.
"In one of the videos, the speaker
utters the words: "...while Kikuyus are fighting Luos, Woriahs are taking
over Kenya." In the other video, the speaker says: I will make myself part
of the people who have started the struggle for the liberation of the Kikuyu. I
will tell these people that our enemy is not Ruto, our enemy is the
Somalis," noted the ODPP.
The ODPP subsequently directed the DCI and
the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to promptly submit
their investigation findings to the agency for further action.
"Pursuant to Article 157 (4) of the
Constitution, the DPP has directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations
(DCI) in conjunction with the National Cohesion and Integration Commission
(NCIC) to expeditiously can out investigations and forward the resultant
investigation inquiry files for perusal and advice," added the statement.
