DP Kindiki mourns volleyball star Janet Wanja
In a condolence message, Kindiki said that Wanja, who succumbed to cancer on Friday, will be remembered for her exemplary and flamboyant display on the volleyball courts; locally and beyond the borders.
“For over two decades, she carried our flag with pride and patriotism, representing our Country in the continental and global volleyball arena with utmost dedication and commitment,” reads Kindiki’s message.
The Deputy President added that Wanja's prowess as a volleyball player and later as a trainer will forever be etched in the history of Kenyan sports.
“It is a source of inspiration for present and future generations of sports men and women.”
Wanja, a former long serving national women’s volleyball team setter succumbed to gallbladder cancer while receiving palliative care at her home in Nairobi, her family has announced on Friday.
The 40-year-old celebrated setter was diagnosed with the rare cancer a few months ago, shortly after returning from the Paris Olympics, where she served as a trainer for the Malkia Strikers.
Upon returning from Paris, Wanja was out of the spotlight for months before her family confirmed her illness earlier this month.
