DP Kindiki leads talks on expanding Kenyan tea markets

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki hosts meeting with stakeholders in the tea industry on January 8, 2025.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki hosted a high-level briefing at the official residence in Karen on Wednesday to discuss ongoing tea sector reforms and explore strategies for opening new export markets.

The meeting brought together government officials, leaders of key agencies, and stakeholders in the tea industry to deliberate on ways to sustain the sector’s growth.

The government has been actively supporting tea production through initiatives such as subsidized fertilizer, establishing common user facilities for value addition, and tapping into new international markets.

According to the DP, these measures, combined with favourable weather and a stronger Kenyan shilling, have spurred remarkable growth in the sector.

Tea production is reported to have risen from 445 million kilograms in 2022 to 558 million kilograms in 2023 and reached an unprecedented 600 million kilograms in 2024.

Similarly, export earnings increased from Ksh.138 billion in 2022 to Ksh.181 billion in 2023, climbing to Ksh.211 billion in 2024.
