DP Kindiki: Gov’t to connect 1 million Kenyans to electricity in two years
The government is set to connect more than one million
customers to the national grid in the next 20 months.
This is according to Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki,
who spoke on Friday in in Kieni Constituency, Nyeri County.
DP Kindiki said the move, which is in line with the last mile
connectivity program, is underway across the 290 constituencies.
He pointed out that after the completion of the project, the
number of households connected to electricity would rise from 2.5 million in
2013 to 9 million in 2025.
According to the DP, in Nyeri County alone, 10,903
beneficiaries have been connected, and Ksh.733 million has been allocated for
more connections this year.
Kindiki also noted that Kieni Constituency has seen Ksh.164
million allocated to connect 1,163 households, including 101 homes in Aguthi
Village.
At the same time, DP Kindiki launched the Aguthi Rural
Electrification Project which is meant to benefit residents, among them Lydia
Wairimu Karoki, a 73-year-old mother of five and a senior citizen.
“The government is
prioritising the completion of ongoing infrastructural development projects in
Nyeri County and across the country to accelerate Kenya’s economic
transformation agenda,” he said.
