Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua went on an early morning mission to Mt Kenya on Saturday to give thanks for the rains.

In a post on Facebook, the DP said, "I took time to thank the almighty for his Grace and mercy for giving us rain after five consecutive failed seasons and the worst drought in 40 years."

Gachagua had gone to the mountain in January to pray for rains and "search of solace".

On Saturday morning the second in command took to social media to say that he had visited the region to offer prayers of thanksgiving for the rainfall and request for more rain in the coming season that would mean plenty of harvests as drought ravages the country.

“I prayed to God, from the foot of Mt Kenya, to give us more rain and a bountiful harvest,” he said.

In his first trip to Africa’s second largest mountain in January,  Gachagua’s prayer focus was around the freedom of the country and the long drought which had stretched the country up to five consecutive seasons without rains.

At the time, he referred to the Mountain as a symbol of resilience, struggle, and victory.

“I ask many people to come here and pray because the mountain is a symbol of resilience, struggle, and victory,” he said then.

“We have had five failed rainy seasons and our people are staring at hunger. Our animals have died. Children cannot eat. I pray that God heals our land. I pray that God forgives our sins and heals our land so that our people can enjoy the fruits of their hard work.”
