Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua has expressed his
delight at the success of a campaign seeking to eradicate the use of illegal
brews and outlawed drugs in the Mt. Kenya region.
Speaking on Thursday, the DP highlighted the benefits of
the anti-drug campaign, linking it to increased
pregnancies among resident women.
Gachagua asserted that he noticed the aforesaid
gains when he hosted area residents at his Mathira home on Boxing Day.
“Juzi nimeita wazazi
hapa, wakuje wachukue unga, mafuta…Walijaa hapa watu karibu 10, 000. Nikasema
tupige laini ya kina mama ambao wako na watoto wadogo. Watoto walikuwa
wanalia…Nilifurahi sana,” said Gachagua.
“Haya, nikasema tena
wale ambao wanangojea (akimaanisha wenye mimba) wapige laini, ingine hata mrefu
zaidi. Najivunia sana; ya kwamba jamii yetu imerudi. Tuna watoto ambao
wanazaliwa. Tuna wanawake wajawazito, ambao wanatarajiwa kujifungua hivi
karibuni ili jamii yetu iendelee kukua."
On Tuesday, Gachagua said the fight against illicit brew has seen a 70% success rate in Central Kenya, thanking the local administration and the police
for helping with the reforms.
The DP also delved into the
Mungiki sect menace in the Central Kenya region, warning that those trying to
revive the sect in the name of bringing men together will be dealt with
accordingly.
Gachagua said the government is aware of some people who have tried to revive the sect by holding youth conferences, but promised that President Ruto's administration will not yield to that.
