DP Gachagua downplays rumoured conflict with President Ruto, says it is a creation of the media

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has refuted any misunderstanding between him and his boss President William Ruto, saying it is a creation of the media.

Speaking at a church service in Kiambu on Sunday, Gachagua said that in the past two weeks, people have been alleging that he is not on working terms with Ruto, which is not true.

He said the rumour has been peddled by their 'political detractors' and carried by the media.

"I have seen a narrative that was being driven by the media in the last two weeks, ooh there is a problem in the presidency, ooh the DP and the President are not together. How? How?" Gachagua wondered.

He added that the reason for the narrative is because Kenya has been used to conflict between presidents and their deputies since independence.

"So our media and our analysts cannot stay when there is no conflict. So they must create one for them to be relevant," Gachagua remarked.

The DP pointed out instances where the narrative might have originated, saying first they alluded to conflict with Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi, then picked President Ruto's dismissal of shareholders' narrative while touring Nyanza.

Gachagua was the biggest carrier of the shareholders narrative, saying the Kenya Kwanza administration's shareholders are those who voted for Ruto and should be served ahead of others.

"I know most of you were very disappointed when the president won because you were very determined to stop him. And you had every hope that he would fail, yet he is succeeding. You now think there will be a conflict, I want to assure you there will be no conflict in the government of President William Ruto."

The alleged conflict became a buzz when Gachagua, who was on an official visit to Germany, missed the first days of King Charles III and Queen Camilla's visit to Kenya.

The rumour was further fueled when opposition leader Raila Odinga was invited to a state banquet at State House, and was seen smiling with Ruto and the king.
