DP Gachagua defends his position as calls for his impeachment grow louder
Deputy President Rigathi
Gachagua's allies have attributed his tribulations in government to what they
describe as coordinated efforts to undermine his office.
Another section of Kenya
Kwanza lawmakers who spoke in Kericho County called for his removal from
office, in a day marked by the use of mother languages by both camps.
In yet another episode,
factions of Kenya Kwanza made clear the widening rift at the presidency.
First up in Githunguri,
Kiambu County, DP Gachagua sought solidarity from the electorate in Central
Kenya, whom he billed as the buffer against his persecution in government,
deploying his mother language to convey his message.
"You are the ones who
voted for us, didn’t you? Are you tired of me, those saying they are tired with
me who are they? What I know is that the President and me came here and I
begged you to vote for him, we were a pair and some of you voted for us because
I was the running mate representing your interest, kindly allows us to finish
our term," said Gachagua.
Latching onto public support, the DP made his case before a
gathering of coffee farmers.
"We cannot be
rendered jobless in the midst of our term, and it is you, the people who hold
the mandate. Have you seen any wrongdoing? And if I have committed any
wrongdoing, he [The President] should come here in Komothai and tell you my
shortcomings and you, the people will decide," he said.
And in not holding back
against the President, his allies laid blame where they felt his tribulations
stemmed off.
"Ndio sasa tunaambia
Rais, hata kama hauna heshima na naibu wako, patia watu wa mlima heshima. Hawa
ndio walikupatia hiyo kiti," said Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang'wa.
"Waachane na Rigathi wa
Gachagua. Alichaguliwa na wananchi na wangoje miaka tano, turudi kwenu mtuambie
kama ako sawa ama hayuko sawa," Maragua MP Mary Wamaua said.
"Riggy G is the best Deputy President we can have.
Tusikubali kudanganywa. the President had an agreement with the Deputy
President and we demand respect. Aache kusumbua Riggy G, miaka tano ikiisha,
kama hatamtaka amuambie," Starehe MP Amos Mwago added.
In Sigowet-Soin
Constituency, Kericho County, another batch of Kenya Kwanza lawmakers
determined to get Gachagua out of office, labelled him a political liability,
expressing intent to remove him, in a day that saw random deployment of
vernacular languages, that brought to the light the breakdown at the
Presidency.
"If you see it is no
longer tenable for us to be disturbed and to lecture the President, release
this guy [Rigathi Gachagua] from the job," Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot
said.
"On the Gen Z
protests, yesterday you heard the CS naming the people who led the storming of
Parliament, and because he sharpened his knife to take us home, we have also
sharpened ours," said Belgut MP Nelson Koech.
Their remarks, pointed to the evident standoff between the
President and his deputy, and as has been Kenya’s political ecosystem, bearing
all the indications of a short shelf-life, with consequence on the delivery of
the PLAN manifesto the duo sold the Kenyan people.
