DP Gachagua comes to the aid of Dedan Kimathi's ailing widow
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has vowed
to come to the aid of the ailing Mukami Kimathi, wife to celebrated Kenyan
freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi.
The country’s second-in-command took to
social media on Sunday morning noting that it was only recently brought to his attention
that Ms. Kimathi, 101, was admitted to a Nairobi hospital for medical
attention.
"I am saddened that Mukami, the wife of
our hero, Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi Wachiuri, has been ill and admitted at a
Hospital in Nairobi," he wrote on Twitter.
DP Gachagua therefore directed Embakasi
Central MP Benjamin Gathiru to urgently assess the situation as he plans to
later visit Ms. Kimathi upon his return to Nairobi from his Nyanza region tour.
"In this regard, I have tasked
Embakasi Central MP Hon. Benjamin Gathiru a.k.a Major Donk to look into her
situation urgently," he noted.
"On my return to Nairobi later
today, I will make time to visit our mother to check on her progress and
assess possible interventions to make her life more comfortable."
DP Gachagua wished Ms. Kimathi a quick recovery and God's blessings as she receives treatment.
I am saddened that Mukami, the wife of our hero, Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi Wachiuri, has been ill and admitted at a Hospital in Nairobi.
This matter was brought to my attention yesterday while on a working tour in Nyanza with H.E. President @WilliamsRuto.
Ms. Kimathi was reportedly admitted to a city hospital on January 5, 2023, with pneumonia symptoms and thereafter discharged
on January 12.
She was however reportedly not allowed to
leave the facility as the family was unable to offset the hospital bill which
had accummulated to Ksh.1,045,883.
Ms. Kimathi's daughter, Miriam, said they were
hence appealing to Kenyans for donations after alleged attempts to reach out to
President William Ruto and his deputy Gachagua bore no fruit.
"No assistance was provided. Instead, we
were directed to our local Member of Parliament [Embakasi Central MP Benjamin
Gathiru], who continued to take us in rounds,” Miriam is quoted as saying by The
Standard.
“We are calling out on Kenyans of goodwill to
come to our aid. We are helpless as we cannot afford the medical bill."
