DP Gachagua assures justice amid counterfeit fertilizer crisis

The Deputy President made these remarks while addressing over 400 members of the Diaspora Community in Kigali, Rwanda, on Saturday night.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has strongly condemned individuals responsible for distributing counterfeit fertiliser to government depots, assuring Kenyans that those behind the scam will be brought to justice.

He revealed that initial findings showed that unscrupulous suppliers had dispatched 50,000 bags of fake fertiliser—a volume that he, however, deemed insufficient to jeopardize the nation's food security.

The Deputy President made these remarks while addressing over 400 members of the Diaspora Community in Kigali, Rwanda, on Saturday night.

In a question-and-answer session with the Kenyan Diaspora in Rwanda, concerns were raised regarding the disturbing issue of counterfeit fertilisers in circulation, which threatens the country's food security.

The Kenyan Diaspora expressed disappointment over how their hard-earned remittances were being squandered on fake products.

"We work hard to send money home for fertiliser, only to be told the fertilizer purchased is fake," said Kipkoech.

"The subsidy program has been successful... that's a low volume," noted Gachagua.

Responding to the concerns, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua assured that the government recognizes the severity of the issue which he says negates the intended purpose of the fertilizer subsidy program.

"According to Gachagua, out of 40 million bags of fertilizer distributed under the program, approximately 50,000 bags have been identified as counterfeit, supplied by crooked suppliers," he stated.

"The quantity of fake fertilizer involved is very low," added Gachagua, acknowledging the significant impact on those affected. He promised that investigations have been launched and the culprits will be dealt with accordingly.

"We're not saying it's right... We have swung into action, and people will go to court," Gachagua emphasized.

The growing crisis in Kenya has undermined the subsidy program rolled out by the government to strengthen food security in the country.

Members of the National Assembly have intensified efforts to uncover the truth behind the fake fertilizer scandal. The National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB), Kenya Bureau of Standards, and Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi are lined up to appear before the Senate Committee to explain the circulation of fake fertilizer in the market.
