Doctors threaten strike as MTRH faces accusations of unfair labour practices
In a statement to the media, KMPDU Secretary-General Dr. Davji Atellah criticized MTRH for failing to honor the 2017 and 2021 CBAs, alongside other pressing welfare concerns.
Dr. Atellah outlined several grievances, including MTRH's failure to convert contractual terms into permanent and pensionable employment.
He accused the hospital of perpetuating unfair labor practices such as irregular employment contracts, denial of leave, lack of medical cover, stagnation in career progression, and withholding gratuities and pensions for affected doctors.
The union also highlighted the hospital's failure to remit third-party deductions, including bank loans, investment policies, SACCO contributions, pension deductions, and deductions under the SHA program.
Additionally, KMPDU accused MTRH of neglecting to promote senior doctors and failing to register the 2021-2025 CBA, thereby denying doctors key benefits such as equipment allowances, academic release, and other entitlements.
Dr. Atellah warned that if these issues are not addressed within 14 days, doctors at the facility will withdraw their services, disrupting operations at the referral hospital.
KMPDU has urged the MTRH management and relevant stakeholders to act swiftly to resolve the impasse and avert a potential healthcare crisis.
