Doctors’ strike to begin on Thursday - KMPDU SG Atellah
Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists,
and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary General Davji Atellah has announced that
the planned industrial action shall take place on Thursday.
In a statement posted on X, Atellah stated
that there have not been any worthwhile developments since the union announced
a nationwide strike, hence the strike is on.
“It is sad that despite availing ourselves
for meetings at the Ministry of Health, there has been no worthwhile developments
to report to you, and tomorrow midnight, our strike notice shall expire and our
industrial action will begin,” said Atellah in a statement.
“In the face of adversity, I draw
inspiration from your unwavering support, solidarity, and from your strong
resilient spirits. We stand united, not in anger, but in hope for a future where
our healthcare system flourishes, and doctors are empowered to work without
fear,” reads in statement in part.
The KMPDU boss asked law enforcement
officers to reflect on their actions. He added that they should strive to find
common ground since they are public service workers as well.
“To our law enforcement officers, I ask for
a moment of reflection. Let us work together towards an environment where
understanding and support replace acts of violence. You too are public service
workers and users of the very same public services we are fighting for. Our
dedication to justice and peace should guide us in finding common ground,” he
said.
This statement comes after KMPDU issued a
7-day strike notice on March 6, for the withdrawal of doctors’ services in
hospitals over the placement of medical interns.
KMPDU, led by Dr. Davji Atellah held
protests on February 29, over the delay in posting of 1200 medical interns to
hospitals.
Atellah was shot by police officers while
he was leading medical interns in a peaceful demonstration in the capital.
The Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha
had dismissed KMPDU’s demands as being unrealistic, saying the ministry’s hands
are tied regarding the posting of medical interns.
"We cannot do anything
as a Ministry, it's up to the Treasury to facilitate...the The government cannot
cater for over 3,000 interns at this time, they have to be realistic,"
Nakhumicha said.
