Divers retrieve body of Second Year student who drowned while swimming in River Thiba

The body of a Kirinyaga University student who drowned in the Thiba River near Kutus Town in Gichugu constituency has been recovered.

According to Gichugu sub-county police commander Johnson Wachira, the body of Marcus Nyaga, aged 21, was discovered by local divers several metres from where he fell.

According to Gichugu police, the second-year bachelor of education student was swimming with a colleague when the incident occurred on Sunday, near Kutus Bridge.

According to residents led by Samuel Mugane, the incident occurred yesterday around 4 p.m. when his friend raised alarm, attracting locals who responded immediately, led by the area's assistant chief.

'The student lives  in a nearby  hostels near river thiba  and he left  his clothes  intact at the scene,' Mugane said

Shocked students of Kirinyaga university  and relatives  could  not believe it  seeing Marcus'  lifeless body being  retrieved in the river  thiba and taken to a police land cruiser.

The deceased hails from Chuka  and his family has been camping there since last night, awaiting  recovery of the body.

This is the second incident in two months; on May 16, 2024, a third-year building engineering student drowned in the same river, and his body was recovered over ten kilometres away in Ngumbatha village.

The deceased's body had been taken to Kibugi Funeral Home to await a postmortem. ' The body has been taken to Kibugi funeral home as we wait for postmortem' .Gichugu police boss Johnson Wachira said.
