Dishi Na County to continue amid Gov't plan to scrap school feeding programme, Sakaja assures parents
This comes after the National Treasury proposed to scrap off allocation to the school feeding programme in the 2024/2025 financial year budget estimates.
This sparked uproar among Members of Parliament who expressed fear that the move would affect 4.5 million learners.
The programme was allocated Ksh.4.9 billion in the current financial year, but the Ministry of Education appealed for Ksh.1 billion extra in the supplementary budget.
However, in a statement issued on Tuesday evening maintained that Nairobi County's school feeding program will continue being implemented.
"Nairobi parents and children should not worry. Dishi na County school feeding Program remains on," said the Governor.
Sakaja highlight that his administration was committed to enhance the programme , with 200,000 meals being prepared every day , an increase from the previous 180,000 meals which were being prepared last term.
In Nairobi, the school feeding programme is run by Food4Education NGO in partnership with the Nairobi County Government.
"200,000 children are now enlisted and will continje to eat daily," Sakaja affirmed.
The French Government has donated Ksh.144 million to Food4Education for food subsidy to cushion 25,000 learners who cannot afford the Ksh.5 required per child every day in order to benefit from the food.
The Governor confirmed that the county is in the process of constructing an additional seven kitchens spread across seven constituencies to cover the remaining regions within the city.
