Degree drama: Another complaint filed to block Senator Malala from Kakamega Governor race

A voter in Kakamega has filed a complaint before the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) against Senator Cleophas Malala.

The voter Felix Ongadi claims that Malala, who eyeing the Kakamega Governor seat, does not have a degree and that his nomination should be revoked.

"That the nomination was improper due to the fact that the genesis of Malala's degree certificate and KCSE has not been resolved,"reads the complaint.

The matter has been listed for hearing on Friday (today).

This comes as the second petition filed challenging the academic qualifications of Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala with about 50 days to the elections.

In the first petition filed on June 3 this year, petitioner, Fred Muka, claims that the validity of Malala's university degree and KCSE certificate is in dispute and the court should resolve the matter before he is cleared to vie for the Kakamega Governor seat in the August 9 General Election.

He also wants the respondents compelled to avail necessary documentation and records in support of Malala's degree and KCSE certificates.

The petitioner avers that while Senator Malala claims to have graduated in August 2011, the degree in his possession was issued in August 2019. The petitioner further claims Malala's name is neither featured on the 2011 nor 2019 list of USIU graduands.

On the Senator's KCSE certificate, the petitioner claims that the document features a different KNEC code from the one issued to Friends School Kamusinga where he sat the exam.
