DCI officer who demanded Ksh.20K bribe to terminate case released on Ksh.100K cash bail
A directorate of Criminal
Investigations
(DCI) officer was arrested by
detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and later
charged in court for soliciting a bribe to terminate a criminal case.
The
officer, Sgt. Thomas Nahashon Kibet is based at Changamwe Police Station in Mombasa
County.
He was
arrested by sleuths from EACC on Thursday and held at Port Police Station
before being charged with three counts of receiving a bribe, requesting an
advantage and concealing evidence contrary to the law.
"The
suspect was arrested after the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions
(ODPP) concurred with the Commission’s recommendation to charge him," the
court heard.
According
to court documents, the suspect allegedly requested a Ksh.20,000 bribe from a
complainant in exchange for terminating their criminal case in June 2018.
“On the 6th
day of June 2018, at Changamwe Police Station, within Mombasa County in the
Republic of Kenya, being a person employed by a public body to wit, National
Police Service as a Corporal, DCI officer, you requested a financial advantage
of Ksh.20,000 and received an initial amount of Ksh.10,000 from the complainant
with the intent that in consequence therefor, you would compromise an
investigation leading to the termination of the complaint’s criminal case,”
read the documents.
Kibet is
also said to have concealed evidence of receiving Ksh.7,000 from the
complainant which was supposed to be used as evidence in the case.
He denied
the charges before Mombasa Chief Magistrate Alex Ithuku and was released on a Ksh.100,000
cash bail or an alternative bond of Ksh.300,000.
The matter
will be mentioned in court on February 10, 2025.
