DCI launches probe into Limuru burial chaos where Gachagua was attacked
Officers from the Directorate of Criminal
Investigations (DCI) spent the better part of Friday questioning some of the
leaders and members of the public who attended the chaotic burial ceremony in Limuru,
which saw goons attack former Deputy
President Rigathi Gachagua and mourners.
The officers embarked on the task of trying
to find answers about what happened, spending more than 8 hours, questioning
Limuru legislator John Kiragu, to shed light on his alleged involvement in the
chaos that saw a burial ceremony temporarily interrupted.
The police sought to understand why the first
term MP reportedly kept away from the VIP tent which was targeted by the goons,
instead choosing to seat among the mourners in a separate tent.
The MP, however, refuted the claims and
insisted that he was also targeted during the chaos.
At the same time, the DCI officers attached
to Limuru, were also busy combing through witness accounts in Bibirioni
village, questioning among others, family members over the incident.
The distraught family members not only have
to deal with the loss of a loved one but also the damage to property after the
melee.
In a statement, the Office of the Inspector General
of Police Douglas Kanja said it had only received one complaint from the public
concerning the incident.
The IG’s office also added that it did not
know the whereabouts of former Limuru MP Peter Mwathi, who allies of former DP Gachagua
claimed was abducted by the police.
Despite the fact that the attackers broke the
law in broad daylight, with many of them quite visible, the police are yet to
apprehend any.
This as Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang'wa, who
attended the burial, skipped summons by the sleuths in Nyeri, questioning why
the matter was being handled in a different jurisdiction.
The police have termed the incident as a
politically instigated one.
