The operational policies in Daystar University were on Wednesday put under scrutiny at the National Assembly as Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu was put into question on the matter.

This after Nyali Member of Parliament Mohammed Ali, according to a post on his X account, asked the CS to respond to allegations that students enrolled in the university are compelled to attend chapel services which accounts for their final semester grades.

Ali argued that Daystar's regulations infringe on the constitutional rights and freedom of worship of its students.

In his rejoinder, Machogu said that the university maintains that it is a Christian university and all its operations are governed by the very preset and students are required to attend at least 75% of all scheduled chapel services in any given semester.

"The university argues that all the students are admitted with full knowledge that their university is a Christian institution with its own philosophy, ethos and core values," Machogu told the House.

"The university indicates that upon admission students sign a code of conduct by which they agree to abide by the university's Christian values and commitment to participate in the university's spiritual disciplines."

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula therefore directed that a team from the ministry should be sent to the university and probe the allegations.

Machogu is expected to appear before the committee of education in two weeks to table his findings and then a final statement will be submitted to the House.
