Chirchir: I was not involved in Ruto's presidential campaign

President-elect William Ruto's Chief of Staff, Davis Chirchir, has rubbished recent allegations made by John Githongo that put him, alongside Dennis Itumbi, at the centre of an alleged plot to rig the elections.

This comes after Githongo on Tuesday, in an affidavit filed before the Supreme Court, claimed that Chirchir and Itumbi, alongside four other individuals, were the brains behind the said scheme whose base of operations he says was the Hustlers Plaza along Ngong Road.

The four other individuals singled out by Githongo were: Kibyegon, Morris Mutegi, Baby Serge and Jackson Kandi.

Githongo filed the affidavit in support of Azimio la Umoja Presidential candidate Raila Odinga's ongoing petition challenging the results of the August 9 Presidential elections.

Chirchir however countered the allegations by filing a responding affidavit, addressed to the same court, noting that despite interacting with Itumbi on a personal level before, the pair never once worked together during Ruto's pre-election campaigns or during the tallying process.

He likewise stated that that he does not know the other aforesaid individuals and neither has he crossed paths with them before.

"I do not know any of these listed individuals other than Dennis Itumbi, who I have had interactions with over the years. He and I did not work together in any capacity in relation to the Presidential Campaign either pre-election, on election date and/or during the tallying process," said Chirchir.

Chirchir correspondingly underscored that he was not actively involved in Ruto's presidential campaigns despite assertions from the president-elect's detractors. 

"That it is within my knowledge that Ruto had set up the WSR Presidential Campaign Secretariat which was based at an office located on the 2nd floor of Soin Arcade in Westlands. Ruto had engaged personnel to assist him with his campaign," said Chirchir.

"That while I was not involved in Ruto's presidential campaigns, I am aware that this Campaign Secretariat was used for political, technical, communications and strategy meetings during the course of the campaign. I was not involved in the 9th Respondent's campaigns."
