CS Jumwa launches 50 million tree planting campaign in Machakos County

Public Service, Gender and Affirmative Action Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa has launched a project aimed at planting over 50 million trees in the country at the National Youth Service (NYS) in Yatta, Machakos County.

 Speaking during the event, CS Jumwa said that over 10,000 trees have already been planted in the 5000-acre tract of land. 

She further added that this is in line with the government’s target to plant 15 billion trees by 2032 under the tree growing and restoration programme. 

“To tackle climate change we have to plant trees, kwa hivyo hiyo ni jukumu y kila mmoja wetu, unaweza kuifanya ukiwa pekee yako am collectively. Tuweze kurudisha hali ilikua hapo nyuma, tutupe ukame tusikatakate miti ovyo lakini tupande miti zaidi,” she said.

Jumwa also noted that the project will go on in the NYS Field Service Units countrywide. 

NYS Director General James Tembur who was also present added: “We’ve already bought 35 million seedlings out of the targeted 50 million so this can even surpass the target by March 2024. The target was 50 million and I’m sure we can surpass the target with proper planning.”
