COVID-19: Kenya attains 10 million vaccination target as 2,791 new cases recorded

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe in a statement on Friday stated that a total of 10,002,184 vaccines had so far been administered as of December 30.

“5,820,951 are those above 18 years who are partially vaccinated while those fully vaccinated were 4,155,832,” stated Kagwe.

“Another 20,121 are doses administered to those between 15 to 18 years while 5,280 are booster doses,” the CS added.

Kagwe further noted a 15.3 percentage of adults who are fully vaccinated, as well as a 55.8% uptake of the vaccine’s second dose among those who had received their first jab.

The ministry is working towards vaccinating a targeted population of 27,246,033.

Meanwhile, 2,791 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours from a sample size of 9,384, bringing the positivity rate to 29.7%.

“From the cases, 2,573 are Kenyans while 218 are foreigners. 1,434 are females and 1,357 are males. The youngest is an eight-month-old child while the oldest is 103 years,” noted Kagwe.

The cases are distributed across other counties as follows: Nairobi 933, Siaya 198, Kiambu 170, Nakuru 166, Mombasa 152, Migori 112, Nyamira 111, Murang’a 92, Kirinyaga 86, Kajiado 56, Kisumu 56, Uasin Gishu 48, Laikipia 47, Kilifi 44, Kakamega 43, Machakos 42, Kericho 39, Nyandarua 34, Nyeri 31, Embu 31, West Pokot 31, Busia 30, Meru 28, Garissa 23, Kwale 22, Kitui 21, Bungoma 20, Narok 19, Makueni 16, Vihiga 16, Taita Taveta 11, Bomet 9, Trans Nzoia 8, Turkana 7, Baringo 7, Kisii 7, Homa Bay 6, Marsabit 6, Lamu 5, Isiolo 2, Nandi 2, Tana River 2 and Tharaka Nithi 2.

This brings the total number of cases recorded to 295,028 out of the 3,030,272 tests conducted so far.

The ministry has meanwhile recorded 1,058 recoveries, 959 of whom are from the Home-Based Isolation and Care program while 99 are from various health facilities countrywide. 

“Total recoveries now stand at 252,281 of whom 203,186 are from the Home-Based Care and Isolation program, while 49,095 are from various health facilities countrywide,” added Kagwe.

Two patients have, however, succumbed to the disease, bringing the total fatalities recorded to 5,378. 

At the same time, Nairobi County still leads with 33.9% of its population fully vaccinated, followed by Nyeri at 31.2%, Laikipia 24.7% Kiambu 22.3% and Kakamega at 18.6%.
