County Assemblies training on oversight kicks off in Kisumu

Training for the members of the county assemblies on governance and oversight has kicked off in the lakeside city of Kisumu, with the aim of equipping the MCAs with oversight tools as they oversee the county governments.

The two-day training sessions brought together county assemblies from Kisumu, Homa Bay, Siaya, Migori, and Kisii as the first batch in a program that will roll out across the country.

“We are starting a program to train our MCAs to empower them in their accountability role as well as in budget-making,” said Migori Senator Eddy Oketch.

The inaugural Local Governance Institute Training Workshop is focused on strengthening County Assemblies' legislative, oversight, and representative roles to enhance grassroots governance.

“Accountability in devolution begins with the MCAs. They are the ones who oversee the monies given to counties at the grassroots level. This empowerment is key to improving oversight,” said Kisumu Deputy Governor Owili.

Kisumu Governor Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o is among the governors lined up for the two-day workshop that aims at linking governors and MCAs to bridge the accountability gap.

Migori MCAs have already attended a training workshop in Johannesburg, South Africa, at the African Leadership Academy.

“We are going to ensure that MCAs acquire the crème de la crème of knowledge on oversight. We want to see seamless budgeting at the assembly level,” added Migori Senator Oketch.
