COP29: Kenyans at the forefront of climate negotiations
The African continent is pushing for $ 1.3 trillion to compensate for losses and damages caused by the impacts of climate change.
A number of distinguished Kenyans are making significant contributions to the negotiations:
Dr. George Wamukoya, team leader of the African Group of Negotiators support is spearheading discussions for the G77 and China on agriculture and food security. His team is working diligently to finalize and adopt key items outlined in the draft resolutions.
Joyce Kimtai is leading efforts on research and systematic observations, ensuring that robust scientific data underpins the negotiations and informs policy-making.
During a meeting with the Kenyan delegation in Baku, Festus Ng'eno, the Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Climate Change, expressed his support for the team's leadership and dedication. He wished them success as they navigate the complex roles assigned by the AGN.
"This is a finance-focused COP," Ng'eno stated, "and we are hopeful for positive outcomes regarding the New Collective Quantified Goals (NCQG)."
Kenya’s proactive involvement underscores the nation's commitment to fostering sustainable solutions and advocating for Africa's voice in global climate policies.
