Cooperative University ICT officer arrested for demanding Ksh.50K bribe to fix student results
Detectives from the Ethics
and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) have arrested an ICT officer working at
the Cooperative University of Kenya for demanding Ksh.50,000 bribe from a student
to correct an error in the examination results as displayed in the University
portal.
The suspect, Evans Matiro Watenya is said to have asked the female student to part with the aforementioned amount after the latter inquired about how her examination results in the portal had been mysteriously altered from Second Class Honours, Upper Division to Lower division two months before her graduation in December.
According to EACC Spokesperson Eric Ngumbi who confirmed the arrest, the suspect then told the student the only way the error could be rectified was 'if she parted with Ksh.50,000 as tea.'
The complainant managed to raise only Ksh.30,000 but then reported the matter to the commission after she was unable to raise the rest.
EACC officers moved and arrested the suspect on Friday evening after investigations.
He is currently held at Kilimani Police Station awaiting arraignment.
