Construction sector players urged to leverage government housing program

Players in Kenya’s construction industry have been urged to capitalize on the government’s affordable housing program to drive growth, create jobs, and address the country’s housing deficit.

Speaking during the launch of BINAA, a comprehensive hub for building and home finishing solutions, Kikuyu MP and Leader of the Majority, Kimani Ichungwa, reiterated the government’s dedication to affordable housing as a key driver of economic growth. He called on industry players to align with public initiatives.

“The affordable housing program is more than just a construction plan—it is a pathway to inclusive economic growth,” said Ichungwa

“It creates opportunities for local businesses, skilled professionals, and manufacturers while addressing Kenya’s housing deficit. Let us seize this opportunity to foster innovation and job creation across the value chain” added Ichungwa

Housing Secretary Said Athman highlighted the scale of Kenya’s housing challenge, noting a demand of 250,000 units annually and an accumulated deficit of 3 million units as of December 2023. The private sector currently contributes only 25% of the annual demand.

“The construction of 130,000 units under the affordable housing program has already created demand for over 7 million tiles, 350,000 sanitary ware, and 820 lifts. This demonstrates the vast opportunities available for suppliers, manufacturers, and contractors,” said Athman.

BINAA, Kenya’s first one-stop hub for high-quality building materials, finishes, and expert services, was lauded as a game-changer for the sector. The showroom, located in Karen, Nairobi, aims to simplify the construction process by offering innovative solutions and reliable support from design to maintenance.

Ahmed Mohamed, BINAA’s resident architect, explained the inspiration behind the hub, which was born out of challenges faced by builders and homeowners in sourcing reliable materials.

“Our goal is to simplify construction. We aim to empower builders and homeowners with high-quality products, innovative solutions, and reliable support,” said Mohamed.

He added that BINAA would work with the National Construction Authority to upskill and accredit local artisans, enhancing industry standards.

The launch was also attended by industry leaders and policymakers, including Wajir Governor and Chair of the Council of Governors, Ahmed Abdullahi, and Suna East MP Junet Mohamed..
