Concerns after former diplomats burial delayed over medical bill dispute

A dispute between the family of the late Titus Gatuthu Kaburu Theuri, a former diplomat and government official, and Metropolitan Hospital has drawn public attention, sparking debate about the handling of medical bills and burial arrangements in the country.

Mr. Theuri, who served as a Commercial Attaché in London from 1982 to 1989, passed away on October 24, 2024. Despite the family’s plans for a burial within two weeks, an outstanding hospital bill of Ksh.7.4 million delayed arrangements.

The family had already made significant payments, including Ksh.5 million upfront and weekly installments of Ksh 200,000, alongside offering a title deed worth Ksh.5.5 million as collateral. However, negotiations with the hospital for the release of the body extended far longer than anticipated, compounding the family's grief.

Kaz Theuri, the deceased’s son, voiced his frustrations: "We prioritized our father’s care and worked towards clearing the bill, but the delays in resolving the matter prolonged our grief."

The situation escalated on December 9, 2024, when the family alleged that additional payments were requested. The body was eventually transferred to Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH) on December 6, but questions remain about how such cases are handled.

Metropolitan Hospital’s Position

In a statement, Metropolitan Hospital offered condolences to the Theuri family and acknowledged the challenges they faced. The hospital emphasized its policy of fostering dialogue to address arrears and highlighted its efforts to support the family, including fundraising initiatives and flexible payment plans.

"Our policy does not involve holding burial permits or using them as a tool for debt recovery. We are committed to compassionate and collaborative solutions in all cases," the statement read.

Celebrating a Storied Legacy

Affectionately known as G.K. Theuri, Mr. Theuri played a pivotal role in representing Kenya’s trade interests abroad during his diplomatic service. His exceptional performance saw him extend his usual three-year term, a testament to his dedication and impact.

He was buried on January 17, 2025, at his family home in Kaheti village, Mukurwe-ini, Nyeri County.

Mr Theuri is survived by his wife, Beth Wanjirû Theuri, a retired nurse residing in the UK, and his son, Kaz.
